"Kid's" Movies

Since this summer has been a revisit to old projects and hobbies, I’ve been watching an unusual amount of movies, more specifically, critically acclaimed animated features ( and the imdb top 200). It’s weird, but many of these movies were kids movies that I just never saw as a kid. An American Tail, Secrets of NIMH, Watership Down (which, by the way, isn’t a kids movie, in any way. I’ve got the ebook, and plan on getting through it shortly.) I’ve come to the conclusion that the secret to all the best animated features is the ability to take your audience seriously. It’s like sitting them down at the beginning and telling them “Yes, it’s animated, but we respect you and your intelligence so here’s an intelligent story.” I watched Toy Story the other day for the first time in years, with a group of high school graduates at my brothers grad party. I could actually see the movie work it’s magic. At first, there were some who were hesitant, making jokes at every chance they could find. But by the end of the movie, everyone was watching intently. Pixar seems to have this down to an art.

Don Bluth seems to be a common name among the movies I’ve never seen. I watched Titan AE the other night. Now THAT was a movie that needed a better define demographic. They really should have accepted a PG13 rating and gone with it, instead of trying to tame it down and grab a more general PG audience. It’s too bad he hasn’t done much since, I’d like to see him re-attempt a movie like Titan. I’m finding Dragons Lair and Space Ace right now…

I might download some tv shows as well, and I still have never seen the original transformers movie.
