A friend of mine was in a snowboarding competition that day, and there is an after party to which he has VIP for. However, it’s only 8pm and I have another couple hours until he is going to call. There is a lounge in the hotel. I figure I should go down and have a couple drinks with the other guests. Apparently, celebrities are known to frequent this lounge. Plus, live piano.
I saunter to the bar and sit beside two good looking Australians. I order a gin and tonic (one of the acceptable drinks for a man)
I look around the place. It’s a weird mixture of hunting lodge and upscale lounge. There is a fireplace, a deer head decorates the mantle above it. While I’m admiring the decor, the Australians are replaced by a group of older looking Americans. They are from Washington, up here on a weekend trip. We discuss places to go, and I tell them about my invitation from the Canucks. They leave, and I notice someone by the piano requesting Metallica songs. Apparently the man is lost, because the pianist has no idea what he is talking about. I saunter to the piano (is there anyway else to move in a lounge?) and ask the pianist if he knows anything by George Gershwin (favorite). This guy not only knows almost every one of his pieces, he can play a medley of them, of the top of his head. Flawlessly. Damn. His technical skill is amazing. So I ask if he can play any Chopin (other favorite). I get a similar experience. This guy is good. It’s unfortunate that he is leaving. It’s already 10pm, and my friend is going to call anytime. He tells me I have excellent taste. I pay my bill and get back up to my room. It’s party time.
