So, a few days ago, I’m with some people, and I see a Vancouver Canucks advent calendar. This is quite different then my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles advent calendar, so I pick it up and check the back (advent calenders always have something on the back.) I find a “Match the NHL Jersey to The Logo” game. I recognized not only every team logo, but could perfectly match all the jersey’s to each team.
I stand there, perplexed. How did I know? For a long time, more than two decades, I’ve had little to no interest in ‘sports’. Indeed, I’ve proudly announced that I did not see “the game” last night, nor was I planning to catch it that weekend. How did this happen? Let’s look back at how I spent my time during various point in my life.
“So now I stand, falling into an abyss of names and statistics.”
Elementary
Indoor kid, wanted to sit inside and build stuff with blocks, draw, play Pokemon, etc. Going outside was only fun in the winter, when I could go outside and build stuff with snow. Other time was spent at martial arts lessons, learning to hurt others with fists, and scouts, learning to hurt myself with fire.
(SIDENOTE: I defend martial arts lessons for younger children. It was really helpful to me as a kid. Make sure you find a good dojo to learn in though. I have mixed feelings on scouts.)
Junior High
Got a video camera, spent most free time making videos with my friends. Other time was spent planning missions to overthrow oppressive religious-school administration. Most of these missions involved thievery and vandalism. Any other time is spent making fun of the drone-like following and holier-than-thou attitude of every person in the building.
High School
Hung out in the hallways by lockers and watched movies with my friends on one of my friends’ laptop. Made fun of the all the other cliques.
College
All free time is spent doing projects. In the school, in front of my laptop, in the dark. Other time is spent doing projects at home, in front of my laptop, in the dark.
Now
I spent every waking moment editing videos about hockey, making graphics about hockey, watching hockey on the TV in my office, or watching live hockey games. There is no other time.
So now I stand, falling into an abyss of names and statistics. I’ll probably join the hockey pool next season. Soon this sickness will spread to other sports, and I’ll have opinions on Michael Vick’s recent sentence for running dog fights on his property, and what implications it will have on the Falcons’ season…God dammit…
