Conventions

I started this blog shortly after my trip to N.A.B. last year, and I was debating on whether or not to go again this year. I learned quite a bit, and met some really great people. However I’m not sure if this conference is going to be as good second time round.

Alright here we go. It’s time for ULTIMATE PROS AND CONS!!!!! It’s like regular pros and cons but WITH MY CAPS LOCK KEY DOWN!!!!!!1111oneoneoneone

PROS – I’d be 21, although that didn’t really stop me from enjoying underage drinking/gambling last year (No clubs though. I whined constantly about that fact the whole trip. The people in my room were really great to put up with it.)

- I’d be staying at a nicer hotel (Flamingo. It’s where the aforementioned drinking happened last year.)

- Lectures. The actual show floor wasn’t that helpful to me (except the creative cow suite, they were awesome.) and the biggest help I got was the lectures on client management and shooting techniques. This is the biggest reason for going again.

CONS – Money. It’s going to be way more expensive then last year, because I’m not getting the student discount on everything. (around 1.5-2 times more)

- Time. The conference is on the same week as first week of AHL playoffs. Getting the time off will be impossible.

- I went to several lectures about the adobe CS3 suite, the new versions of 3DStudio MAX, and other software, which, at the time, was new and interesting. Now, it’s yesterdays news, and those lectures probably won’t exist. This is really important because the lectures are what raise the price so drastically, and there what I’m really going for.

- Many of the people I went with last year have vowed to go again this year. However, we were all in school at the time. Now, everyone has graduated, gotten jobs, and has way less time to go on the trip. Booking vacation time has become the big issue. I liked going, but part of what made it so fun was the people I was with. Timing also effects me as well. The week of NAB is the very first week of AHL playoffs. It would be very hard to get time off during that week.

So that’s that breakdown. I think it’s safe to say I should start looking for other places to go, preferably in the summer.
Heres a list of other conferences/conventions/festivals

South by Southwest
Coachella
ComicCon

On the other hand, if I don’t go to a festival, I may try Coach Surfing as it looks like a lot of fun.
