Montreal: Day 5

Fifth Day: Going Home
We woke up and thought we would walk to the nearby universities to check out there student art galleries. Some impressive, some not so much. Typical college gallery. We finished walking around, went back to the hotel, and called for a taxi. I ended up leaving about 1/5 of a bottle of rye on the bed stand. A pretty good tip, if I do say so myself.

We survived another taxi trip to the airport. We went there two hours early so we wouldn’t miss our flight (we were going to be DJing a wedding a hour after we got after the plane.) Plus we thought there would be an arcade in the Montreal Airport.

There was no arcade in the Montreal Airport. So we walked around for 2 hours until our flight was ready to go. I fell asleep during the flight and woke up 15 minutes before we were to land. We get through the terminal, and theres Josh waiting for us. We drive and gather the things for the wedding (Torqs, Hard Drive, Laptop.)

I mentioned this before, but this was going to be our first time doing this. Josh had been doing sound stuff for years though, and both Iain and I knew the hardware well enough by now. Still, I had read reports online about the torqs messing up. The first ones I got had problems as well. We had a laptop, so worse case scenario, the torqs break and we DJ with itunes for the rest of the night.

We get to Assiniboine park pavilion. Our client is there with his, at this point, wife (the ceremony had been a day prior.)

We start to set up (it’s going to be an hour before guest start to arrive. We see the food come out: Hot damn. There is some good looking stuff being set out. It was all really good finger food, none of which I can remember the names of.

We took this time to go over the setlist. Our client had given us a list of 100 or so songs he’d like us to play. Mostly indie stuff. He’d organized them into groups of when during the event they should be played. It was like he had done all of our work for us.

Guest soon started arriving. We started playing the songs from his list. Lots of Gypsy Kings and other lounge type stuff. All fine and well.

Then it came to speeches and such. Pretty boring stuff, since all the hilarious jokes they were making about the bride and groom were completely lost on me.

After that was the couples dance, the parents dance, this-that-and-the-other-thing dance. Whatever, the songs for these had been given to us and specified beforehand. Boring.

And then, once the last preplanned dance was over, it was up to us. We rocked the hell out of that place for the next 6 hours. It was awesome. Coming up with stuff to play, mixing it with other stuff, reading the crowd. This is exactly what I had hoped it would be like. We got told several times during the night by people that we were the best DJ’s they had ever heard (including the staff, no foolies.)

I came back home at 2am, put the torqs on the table and collapsed into my bed. My journey was over, and I looking forward to sleep. Tomorrow I would be getting ready for my new job on Monday.
